Privacy Policy

Forage Academy is built by homeschool parents, for homeschool families. We collect as little as possible, never sell your family's information, and put parents in control of everything their child does here.

Who we are

Forage Academy is an educational program of Forage Healing Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This policy explains how the Forage Academy iOS app and the forage.academy website handle information. Questions? Email hello@foragehealing.org.

Built for children, controlled by parents

Forage Academy is intended for children roughly ages 5 to 13, used under the direction and supervision of a parent or guardian. A parent creates and owns the family account, adds each child, and consents to the practices in this policy on the child's behalf. Children do not create accounts themselves, and we do not knowingly collect information from a child without a parent setting up and managing the account. We follow the principles of the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

What we collect

  • Parent account. Your email address and family name. Sign-in uses passkeys (Face ID / Touch ID / a security key), so we never see or store a password.
  • Child profile. Only what a parent enters: the child's first name or nickname, age, grade level, interests, and learning preferences. No last names, addresses, or contact details are required.
  • Learning activity. A child's conversations with the AI guide, answers to exercises, and progress and mastery in each subject. This is what makes the learning personalized, and what parents review for oversight.
  • Voice (optional). If a parent enables voice, the child's spoken answers are captured by the device microphone and turned into text using your device's speech recognition. We receive only the resulting text as the child's message, and we do not store raw voice recordings. The guide's spoken replies are generated as audio from text.
  • Basic technical logs. Timestamps and error/diagnostic logs we need to operate, troubleshoot, and secure the service.

We do not collect precise location, contacts, or photos, and the app does not use the camera. We do not use advertising identifiers or any third-party advertising or behavioral-tracking technology.

How we use information

  • To provide and personalize each child's learning and generate age-appropriate activities.
  • To give parents full visibility into what their child is exploring, including optional summary emails you can turn off.
  • To keep the service safe and age-appropriate, and to send account and security messages.
  • To fix problems and improve the product.

We do not sell or rent personal information, we do not show ads, and we do not use any child's information for advertising.

AI and service providers

We use a small number of trusted providers to run the app. They act as our processors, handling data only to deliver the feature requested, and through their API services, which do not use submitted content to train their AI models:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS): secure hosting, database, and Amazon Bedrock (Anthropic's Claude) for the AI dialogue.
  • OpenAI: to generate the guide's spoken voice and the illustrations used in activities such as coloring pages, puzzles, and story games.

What parents can see and control

Parents can review their child's full conversation history and activity, edit or delete a child's profile, turn subjects or voice on or off, and ask us to access, correct, or delete their family's information at any time. To make a request, email hello@foragehealing.org. We will verify you as the account owner and respond promptly. Deleting a child's profile removes that child's learning data; closing the account removes the family's information.

How long we keep information

We keep information while the account is active so a child's progress carries over between sessions. We delete it at a parent's request, or within a reasonable period after an account is closed, except where we must retain limited records to meet legal or security obligations.

How we protect information

Sign-in uses passkeys instead of passwords, data is encrypted in transit, and access is limited to what is needed to operate the service. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your family's information.

Children's privacy (COPPA)

Because Forage Academy is designed for families with children, a parent must set up the account and provides verifiable consent before a child uses it. Parents may review the personal information we have collected from their child, ask us to delete it, and refuse to allow any further collection by deleting the profile or closing the account. We collect only the information needed to provide the educational service and never condition a child's participation on disclosing more than is reasonably necessary.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we will revise the date above and post the new version here. Significant changes affecting how we handle children's information will be communicated to parents.
